The Miracles of Jesus – Week 1
Mark 4:35-41, John 21:25
In the four gospels Jesus performed 37 miracles, but these were only some of the miracles He performed, according to John 21:25
25 Jesus did many other things as well. If all of them were recorded, I imagine the world itself wouldn’t have enough room for the scrolls that would be written. — John 21:25
We often live life just going through the motions, expecting NOTHING extraordinary to happen. BUT, when WE follow Jesus, We’re following a miracle worker!
…what Jesus has in store for your life is always better than what you’ve ever imagined
Jesus performed miracles (for several reasons):
Demonstrate HE is the Messiah & Son of God & that we should believe in HIM: “Jesus performed many other signs in the presence of his disciples, which are not recorded in this book. But these are written that you may believe that Jesus is the Messiah, the Son of God, and that by believing you may have life in his name” (John 20:30–31).
To provide confirmation of his message about the kingdom of God. “So Paul and Barnabas spent considerable time there, speaking boldly for the Lord, who confirmed the message of his grace by enabling them to perform signs and wonders” (Acts 14:3)
Testify to his limitless compassion for people & his longing to see people set free from all bondage: “When Jesus landed and saw a large crowd, he had compassion on them and healed their sick” (Matthew 14:14).
Our 1st miracle:
Mark 4:35-41 Common English Bible
35 Later that day, when evening came, Jesus said to them, “Let’s cross over to the other side of the lake.” 36 They left the crowd and took him in the boat just as he was. Other boats followed along. 37 Gale-force winds arose, and waves crashed against the boat so that the boat was swamped. 38 But Jesus was in the rear of the boat, sleeping on a pillow. They woke him up and said, “Teacher, don’t you care that we’re drowning?”
39 He got up and gave orders to the wind, and he said to the lake, “Silence! Be still!” The wind settled down and there was a great calm. 40 Jesus asked them, “Why are you frightened? Don’t you have faith yet?” 41 Overcome with awe, they said to each other, “Who then is this? Even the wind and the sea obey him!”
1. Emmanuel — God With us
Jesus knows our needs & brings calm in the midst of our life’s storms…
2. Jesus Acts on Our Behalf!
Jesus first calms the storm (takes care of the perceived immediate need)
Then he addresses the underlying issue (“Why are you frightened? Don’t you have faith yet?”)
(Fear vs Caution)
“Caution is based in knowledge, Fear is based in the Speculation”
The question the disciples asked one another is a vital question for us today:
“Who is this?”
